Jim,

Before I commit to making the trip all the way from Highland Park, can you confirm that you will be appearing live and in person?  Or, will we be interacting with your hologram while you are off on some skiing/sailing excursion?

I have registered and will be there

I think that Paul Arnold’s questions are interesting. What do I consider my greatest achievement? Well, I suppose it would depend on when you are talking about. Was it when I was present at the birth of my son? At that time I would have said that was my greatest achievement. 43 years later,  has shown me that I would not have been too far wrong with that answer. He has grown up to be a network engineer, caring father, great husband and an amazing son.

Then there was the birth of my daughter. She was beautiful beyond words. That could have been my greatest achievement. 38 years later she has grown into one of the most competent and caring women that I have ever had the privilege to know.

I have done many things that  I am proud of; any one of which could be my greatest achievement. I built an electrical contracting business, I worked as the head of the middle school at a private boarding school in Oregon. I was Director of Training at the Founding Church of Scientology in Washington,DC. Currently I am a counselor in the Founding Church in DC. I get to help people every day and that makes me happy.

I have a great wife, who I have been married to for 18 years.

That I think sums up what has been going on in my life. I look forward to seeing you again after all these years and hearing your story.

Hi Everyone

Just a reminder to get yourselves signed up for the NTW reunion and to let your hosts' know If you are going to attend your Jr. High gatherings. It looks like a fun weekend ahead and only 5 weeks away.

Special attention to Avoca classmates, but all of you can play.  Name these children:

Great photo, Paul.  I think I can come up with 10.  Back row (L to R): Larry Fulhorst, ?, ?, ?, Robert Lieberman, ?, ?, Kathy Storch, Karen Abrfams, ?, ?   Middle Row: David Ream, ?, ?, ?, Char Smith, ?, Anne Stone, ?.  Front row: Cathy Olsen, Larry Reitzer, ?, ?, ?, ?, Rick Schram.  My apologies, Paul, but I don't recall you at Avoca (I do at NTW)......but there's a lot of stuff I don't recall anymore.  Since you came up with the photo, I'm guessing you're in it.......next to Char Smith?  Bonus points for the teacher's name?  Hooper

Benjamin (A. K. A Rock) Bagby

From Rock Bagby: I look at this photo with amazement because I recognize almost every single face as if it were yesterday. Some of those little folks had HUGE personalities! But I was a corporate brat: attended Hubbard Woods School grades 1-3, then grade 4 at Sunset Ridge, then the Latin School (Chicago) grade 5 before moving out of state. When we returned to IL I was at Avoca grades 6-8. I don't recognize myself in this photo, nor the teacher, but almost all the kids are known to me. I'd love to have a precise ID of the class and school. Thanks for sending this -- memory is such an amazing function.

Kim Buol (Ribordy)

Hi old friends!   I can identify a couple of classmates and I have a couple of guesses.

This is a photo of Mrs Dale's 1st grade Avoca class!!!

Back row 2nd left is Denise DeFalco.  Far right may be Jane Judsen, unless she's middle row 4th from left.

Front row left is Cathy Carlson (not Olsen); 4th from left I think is Anne McCaleb; 6th from left is Kim(Buol) Ribordy-Pucalik, me!

I fondly remember Mrs Dale's gum drop tree.   And I recall my fear of anyone arousing Mrs Dale's anger...scary!

Correction that Anne McCaleb is middle row 2nd left I think

08/16/19 02:52 PM #41

Geri Piller (David)

Well, since it's my picture I can identify almost everyone.

Back row:  Larry Fulhorst, Denise DeFalco, Missy Cade, Craig Linster, Robert Lieberman,Mrs. Dale, Larry Peet, Geri Piller (me), Kathy Storch, Karen Abman, and two I don't know

Middle row:  David Ream, Anne McCaleb, Jeannette Savage, don't know, Charlene Smith, Hugh Breyer, Anne Stone, Bobby Slade

Front Row:  Don't know (maybe Barbara Cody), Larry Reitzer, don't know, Elise Rubenstein, Nikki Singer, don't know, Ricky Schram

Wow Geri,

That's a great photo and the fact that you can remember the names of so many of the students is amazing. I was at Avoca at that time but in another class.

Kim, we grew up 3 doors apart........waited at the same bus stop daily........and I don't think I would have ever picked that out as you!  Geri, I don't know how I missed you althought I went over the photo pretty quickly.  Nice to know that your memory hasn't faded at all......although I do question your ID of Jeanette Savage (my first crush).  Craig LInster (great sense of humor) was another I should have recognized.  I recall his older brother could do hundreds of push-ups and would often be seen walking down the hall on his hands.  As for Craig......he was double jointed and was able to put his leg behind his head.  Playing softball in Irv Cooklin's gym class one day.......someone hits a line drive to the outfiled that scoots by Craig who is sitting down and imitating a dog by scratching the back of his head with his heel!

Kevin O'Callaghan

Me (the short story):

- Didn't enjoy High School much. Serious A.D.D. But I was drawing constantly - and well - but regretfully never took an art class at NTW. I still feel resentful that some teacher / advisor there never pointed me in the direction of art. I'm sure they must have had some great teachers / classes.

- Lincoln Jr. College, downstate IL, made several lifelong friends, went to protests, including hitchhiking to DC when Nixon bombed Cambodia. Took art classes and really dug it. Girlfriend became pregnant, baby adopted, I looked the daughter up in 1995, now great friends - happy ending!

- Got BFA from Fairleigh Dickenson U. in New Jersey.

- A couple of years of manual labor - mostly with the Kenilworth Park District. Also, gigs at the Union 76 in Glencoe, and bartender at Barnaby's!

- Back to school at 27 - the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. First time in my life I got great grades - and worked ass off. Fell in love with graphic design and art direction.

- My teacher/mentor hires me - small office in LA (Wilshire and Highland), learn everything there is to know about advertising from a NYC madmen pro.

- Get job in New Zealand! Senior Art Director for McCann-Erickson in Wellington. Hated it at first, then loved it. Met future wife at agency. Spent most time with Leo Burnett International, winning awards, winnning new business. But the important part is - learned to love sailing! Bought a 33' keeler built in 1910 with my best friend - both landlubbers. Sailing grounds: The Marlborough Sounds - deep salt water protected by fjords. Got married, became dual citizen, stayed 14 years.

- With 6 month old daughter, we move to Minneapolis. Get job as Creative Director at ad agency. Stay working there for 16 years. Learn to (almost) love the MN winters.

- Left job in 2011, been freelance ever since. Still working. And doing more fine art - oil paintings, pastel paintings, drawings. Also doing lots of road trips - many are solo trips - clears the mind. Also, started teaching design class at Univ. of Minnesota.

- Health good. Finances only just OK. Still play guitar (not enough), and play golf (not enough). Next: who knows? We talk about moving back to NZ. Or Europe. Or California. That's it. K.O.

Geri, Was that picture from second grade at Avoca West? My family moved to Glenview near the end of first grade for me and that was at Avoce East. You and several others in this picture were in that first grade class. Everyone else has a much better memory than I do. I only recognized a few. I also remember Les Koll being in our class at East and you calling him "Mushroom" for what reason escapes me. I remember Miss Dale too. She seemed terrifying at the time but, she was probably a sweet "old" lady in reality. I think my second grade teacher was Miss Schwartz(?). Can any former "Avocados" confrm? (Were they serious? Were we really the Avoca Avocados?)

In addition to the comprehensive list of Chicago "refreshers"  suggested by Pam Drell I want to add my favorite:

The Chicago Architectural Foundation Boat Tour aboard  Chicago's First Lady--about 2hrs .  You can buy tickets online, at their impressive new digs (gift shop and exhibit hall) at 111 E Wacker, or

take the stairs down to water level at the SE corner of Michigan and Wacker where you will board, I think there's a ticket office there.  We do this about every other year when visiting family in Chicago.  The docents are extraordinary.

We always learn something new and are able to keep up with new developments on the amazing Chicago skyline and our rich architectural heritage.  Make sure you get there early enough to get a seat out of doors on the upper deck.

Well we've all had an interesting ride for the past 50 years, nice to see that most of us have done very well, still healthy and active. I can't attend the main reunion event on 9/14 account a previous long-term commitment that night but I will be at Hackney's for the NTE/NTW casual meet-up on 9/13 as well as breakfast at Walker Brothers on the morning of 9/14. Hope to see many of you there. There's no reason we can't arrange other casual meet-ups in the months and years to come, no need to wait for a formal anniversary date. I'd really like to hear all of your stories and get re-aquanted, hard to do in one night.

Here's my story, in the nutshell: Spent 35 years in the railroad industry, mostly as an Amtrak Opperations Manager in many different locations around the country. Most of my carreer was in the Pacific Northwest but I also held positions in the Sanfrancisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York, Miami and Chicago. I retired eight years ago and relocated back to the Chicago area to be close to my now rather large extended family. Currently living in Racine Wisconsin with Mary, my gf and best friend for the past ten years. The attached photo is of Mary and I in Tahiti prior an eclipse-chasing cruise last June.

Hoping to see many of you in the next few weeks, let's keep in touch via facebook, e-mail or whatever...

Brad

I'm up for it. Where is Walker Brothers? I'd love to put an address in my calendar. Sounds fun. Hopefully not too early after a big night out.

OK thanks.

Anyone interested in a breakfast for NTW or Sunset Ridge students on Sunday morning? Or Saturday morning? I'm coming from out of town and want to do as much as possible while I'm there.

The walking tour of the Mob and Ghosts sounds fun also. I'm fine doing things alone, but it would be fun to do as a group. Anyone interested?
